another tree...SNAP

we had a lot of rain this past week...
and as sometimes happens, the trees get waterlogged...top-heavy...
and they SNAP, or just keel over...roots lifting out of the ground.

this time, it snapped.

the whole top half of the tree...on the ground...

making for some good hunting grounds for anything that has a taste for bugs.
Gray Catbird

nearby, waiting his turn...
Cardinal

nearby...also waiting his turn to enter the tangle of branches, leaves & vines...
male Anole on a Bromeliad

a dragonfly also in on the action...

otis...a blur of motion on the branches...

off to my left...looking as though he just went for a swim in our 'swampy-ish pond' out back...
Pileated Woodpecker

same bird...scratching his face against the tree!!
caught him with his eyes closed!!  really weird looking!

if i turned that picture sideways...i think he'd look dead.
yep.

so while the critters are feasting...
sam's starting to cut some of it back.
no rush.

OK. one last picture. THIS is my lucky shot of the week...month? year?
it's that Red-bellied Woodpecker that made a nesting hole in this tree you see him on.
i didn't realize until i got the pic on the comp, that there's a dragonfly in the pic too!!
cool!

have a good week coming up.
be safe.

aaah. cuddle weather!

looking back over my shoulder...
i'm waving goodbye to christmas
and looking forward to the new year.

2013 is going to be a very good year!
SIX, being my lucky number.
2+0+1+3= 6

(Venus is the ruler of #6.
harmony. balance.solutions. enlightenment. compassion. forgiveness.)

AND it's the year of the snake!
i was born in the year of the snake,
1953.
(oops. did i really say that? are you doing the math? i'll save u the trouble. 59.)

anyway.  it's been good cuddle weather...
dipping down to freezing temps at night...
AND in the morning.
ICE on the A/C unit outside

one of the nice things about having #2 son under our roof,
is that he can help sam with the wood splitting.

the wood...keeping us nice and toasty at night.

speaking of travis (#2 son),
when we wandered the woods out back...
he spotted a Southern Ringneck snake,
which he picked up for closer examination before releasing.
the Southern Ringneck snake

look at the bright orange under belly!
a CUTE little snake, fully grown at 10-15 inches long.

i saw a BIG dragonfly which i actually thought was dead because it let me get real close.

but i think it was just cold. it flew away after i snapped this picture.

THEN i spotted the (daytime) moon...peeking from between a tree's skeletal branches.

22 december 2012

there aren't too many critters out and about...but on warmer days,
when the sun is bright...a few can be spotted braving the cold in order to soak up some warmth.

Fence lizard

Zebra Longwing

Anole...in the brown phase against the house

Anole...in the green phase, blending in with some of the still green plants

a big old grasshopper

and lastly...a few birds in the yard, that don't seem to mind the cold too much!!!!

a female Cardinal

a male Cardinal keeping an eye on the female

a Pileated Woodpecker
tough to get a picture of this guy as he just wouldn't stop hammering away!!
thanks to the digital camera...take 20 pic's, get 2 decent ones!! ha.

same Pileated Woodpecker

i'm putting a hold on my Friday Fringes for now.
between running travis back & forth to work, my own work, home stuff & chores...
the weekdays are a blur!  i barely have time for ME.
i need longer...or slower...weekends!  (don't we all!)

ok, off to an appointment...

take care.
be safe.

Blooms. Bee. Butterfly. Birds...DAM!

thanks!
but, nope...i didn't paint this.
'gimp' did.  a (free) photo manipulation program.
i turned it into an oil painting from one of my blooming Azalea pictures.
 cool, yeah!

the Azaleas are attracting bees and butterflies!

Orange-barred Sulphur

TWO Orange-barred Sulphurs

that's not the ONLY TWO for ONE i've spotted this week...

a Pileated Woodpecker

TWO Pileateds!!

oOo

saturday we went for a drive to Rodman Reservoir...
one of the best DAM places in Florida for Largemouth Bass.
we wanted to check out the campground.
it was nothing special, but it'll do for a weekend of fishing sometime.
a Cormorant

 a Great Blue Heron

(not 'gators floating in the background. the reservoir is on a draw down right now
and there are stumps & logs jutting out of what's left of the water!)

well, what do you know...
i actually captured a Bald Eagle flying away with his catch of the day!
blinded by the light...when sam said 'LOOK! an eagle!'
i pointed UP, crossed my fingers and...clicked!

a small piece of weathered wood
stuck between a rock and a hard place.
"can't you give me a little elbow room here! this wood's got to breathe!"

today is an errand day.
and tomorrow i have only one appointment in the morning.
SO,
between this afternoon and tomorrow...
i plan to enter blogland...and not leave until i have circled the world!

have a safe journey & stay cool.

blooms. feathers. carcass. bird. squirrel - - - and milo.

the Azaleas are budding.
they like the cold.   so do i.

this past week we've had a few hard freezes.
no snow here in north florida...but the water in the bird bath froze!!

here's a close up of the water...which i thought looked pretty cool...
with the leaves beneath and the reflection of the trees.

just before the freeze...i noticed the camelia was about to bloom.

luckily it did.  for one day. then it froze, turned brown and shriveled up!

oOo

remember the three little bananas growing in our yard??
this was the first year we had bananas on this plant!

well...they never had a chance to mature.
maybe this year they'll sprout bananas a little earlier.
this is what they look like now.

:(

i found TWO more (Barred) owl pellets, but haven't had the chance to dissect them yet!
THIS is the BIGGEST i have ever found!
2 ¼ inches long and 1 ½ inches wide!!
it's hard to imagine a pellet this size making it up & out of the owl without choking him!
i find myself wanting to gag just imagining that.

feathers on the ground...in piles...in one area...
hmmmm...i think someone...something... has been munching on a Red-shouldered Hawk.

AND that's NOT ALL that has been munched on.

fur spotted on the ground. clumps of it.  appeared to be Opossum fur.

i followed the trail. to the far back of the yard...just beyond the tree line into the woods.
sam spotted it first.
there, on the ground.
a fairly clean carcass.  still much fur clinging.

definitely a 'possum.  poor little guy.
(you know i'm keeping the bones!)

look at the little skinny ribs in the picture below.

we're thinking maybe a bird. hawk or owl...ate him.
if it was a fox or coyote...or a dog...it would have been dragged off.
but a BIG bird (no, not the yellow one!) would have caught it & pulled it apart right there...
on the ground.
-
too much information?
-
ok...smile...here's a Pileated Woodpecker in the front yard.

and a squirrel...

trying to decide if she wants to get a drink while i'm standing there on the porch.
too close for comfort.
but thirst won.

oOo

a quick note...i mentioned last time about my son travis coming to stay with us.
well...we THOUGHT he had a job. travis thought so too.
he worked LAST saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday...
then the boss had to go down to south florida to pick up some palm trees from his palm farm.
travis hasn't heard from him since...and he doesn't answer his cell.
we drove by his business here in town, but the gate has been shut & locked ever since last week!
???
hmmmmm.  so travis is waiting (im)patiently to get paid for his time.
then it might be back to employment app's if this doesn't work out.
will keep you updated.

oOo

SO,
i leave you with a milo snooze.

ummmmm...is she dreaming of gymnastics? the cat olympics?

it looks like she's getting ready to do a head stand.

stay cool & have a safe journey.
