autumn...past & present

this week's Thematic Photographic theme is
Fall colors ~ 216

on Oct 1st, ALL my Halloween creatures find their way out of the closet...
and place themselves here and there...around our home.
on the mantel...of autumn present

it's still too hot for comfort during the day.
i'm TRYING to be patient
for some COOL weather here in north Florida.
NO changing of the leaves...not yet.

so i searched through my pictures of autumns past...for Fall colors.

in and around our home...signs of Fall

this next picture was taken along the Foothills Pkwy in North Carolina in '05.

every week, Carmi @ written inc comes up with a new theme.
no specific day to post your photo...you have all week to get around to it.

join in...read about it here.

thanks for wandering...
stay cool.  be safe.

~rebounded & grounded~

(trying to get back in the swing of things, i thought i'd start with...)

suggested by carmi's written, inc...is...

grounded.

on the ground.
in the ground.
me, grounded.

'grounded' forever...unless it gets caught up in a breeze.

another 'grounded' forever...snake bones

an 'earth star' fungi...popping up & out of the ground

on the ground...a humongous mushroom patch...
seen at one of my client's apartment building.
that's my foot for comparison!

found sticking out of the ground...out back, among the pine trees.
an old turpentine clay pot from the early 1900's.
(this link is a local Turpentine Industry Landmark, right up the road from where i live)

this is a Worm Lizard burrowing back into the dirt. they live underground.

AND lastly...

besides the moon & stars, the sunrise & sunset, candles & incense...
my forever growing collection of stones, gems & feathers...

grounds me.
just a sampling...

((i have lots of catching up to do...with a lot of stuff...not just blog reading.

if you happen to be one of those kind souls who took the time to leave me your
encouraging words of support following my previous MILO post...
i thank you.
your thoughts, your own personal stories, your words of comfort...
means more to me than you know.  thank you.  i'll be seeing you over the next few days.))

stay cool.  be safe.

~me and my angles~

'at an angle...or leaning'

the first thing i thought of when i read this week's theme,
are all the leaning trees around our home...out back...out front...
so i grabbed my camera & ran outside...here are just a few.

yeah, we've had many a leaner go BOOM.
topple over in a storm, or just too much of a soaking rain.

a few more a little farther from home.

out in the Suwannee Wildlife Management area...
is a perfect get away spot called 'Shired Island'.  loaded with weathered wood...
a better name might be Bone Beach.
weathered roots...at all sorts of angles.

 another weirdly angled tree...
(Hillsborough Sate Pk, FL)

how about a boulder...at an angle...
(taken at Cheaha State Park, Alabama)

and lastly...

this tree may not be at an angle...
BUT I WAS,
when i snapped this picture!

~ weathered & worn ~

Thematic Photographic - 211  'weathered and worn'

another inspiring theme offered by carmi at written inc.

the first image that came to mind when i read this week's theme...
was, wood.  driftwood.  weathered wood.
(this photo was taken along the bank of the Chattahoochee River
after visiting Florida Caverns State Park)

the weathered wood we see all along florida's many rivers...

reminded me of the limestone outcroppings which can also be seen
along most of florida's rivers.
this exposed limestone photo taken along the Suwannee River
is weathered & worn and VERY  (50 - 60 million years)  old!!
(much of florida's bedrock, which is largely limestone, is comprised of the
shells of animals that lived  in the shallow seas that once covered this state.
bones & teeth from ice-age mammoths & mastodons
can be found (if you're lucky) in our stream beds or washing up on our shores.)

last year while sam & i were hiking,
a Hackberry butterfly hitched a ride on sam's back.
this poor little butterfly has seen better days.
she looks pretty weathered and worn to me!

in florida's Suwannee River State Park, there's a trail that leads to the
Columbus Cemetery.
(established in 1860, this cemetery consists of 23 graves)

a little closer to home...right up the road from us...
are the remains of the old dog shelter.
now, just piles of rubble...all that stands is most of the front wall of the old building.
if you know me...you may be wondering if i've searched for bones there.
yep, i have.   and nope, never found any.

speaking of bones.
here's an old 'weathered & worn' cow skull leaning against a tree in our yard.
(a neighbor who had lots of cows...years ago...gave me this skull)
not only is it weathered & worn...but it's also chewed on by the squirrels.
i guess they need their calcium too!

something else in our yard
is an OLD, weathered and worn exercise bike!

this rusty exercise bike has to be one of the FIRST exercise bikes ever made.
(i looked it up, and it seems to be from the 1940's)

do you think an exercise bike made nowadays would actually last this long?!
i doubt it.

ok,
my last weathered and worn
is this little pig...
who used to be very good at cleaning the bottom of your boots & shoes.
sadly, all his bristles are worn away.

~O~

hope you enjoyed my take on 'weathered & worn'.
please check out everyone else's

parallel play

(thematic 210 - parallelism)

you never realize how many parallels there are
(not including the universes of course!)
until you search.

here are just a few!

parallel plants growing along the side of our parallel wood home

the parallel lines of the Six-lines Racerunner

parallel lines running down the driveway

the Yellow Rat snake's parallels

parallel lines of the shed's wall

parallel waves at sunrise. Neptune Beach, Florida (8 aug 2011)

even concentric circles are considered parallels

and
so
i leave you with a misspelled sign!

even though this sign was previously in one of my posts...a long while back...

(e-mailed to me by Susan @ This n That.
she snapped this picture while looking for a place to PARALLEL park
in a little town called Nimmitabel,
which is in New South Wales, Australia)

it seemed very fitting to post it again now!

i'm linked up with carmi's thematic weekly photo sharing.
